Freshman Charlotte Wood of the cross country team qualified for the Canadian Junior National Cross Country Team. She will compete for Team Canada at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Junior Cross Country Championships, on March 30, 2019, in Aarhus, Denmark.

Faculty, staff and students interested in high-performance and parallel computing are invited to watch an online telecast of the two-day workshop presented by XSEDE and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. This month’s workshop will cover the topic of large data sets and will focus on Hadoop and Spark programming.
The Heebink Award annually recognizes a faculty or staff member who has provided distinguished service to the state over a period of eight years or more with the Distinguished Service Award, which carries a $3000 honorarium for professional support. In alternate years—including in 2018-2019—a recipient is also recognized with the Beginning Service award for service over a shorter amount of time. This award carries an honorarium of $2,000 for professional support.
Challenges facing economic development in the Potomac Highlands and in West Virginia will be explored in a talk by John Deskins, director of the WVU Bureau of Business and Economics Research. The program will be held in the Mary F. Shipper Library on the WVU Potomac State College campus Nov. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. beginning with a reception hosted by the Rotary Club of Keyser. This event is free and open to the public.
A new city holds new adventures, which may be intimidating to most people but for West Virginia native Alyssa Johnston, it represented her career vision. Johnston took a chance and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where she landed a job with NBA Charlotte Hornets.
Michael T. Escue, a native of Point Pleasant, has committed $1 million to West Virginia University to establish the Ronald E. & Jo Ann Reynolds Escue Neurology Endowment named for his parents.
