Maria Perez, an assistant professor of geography in the Department of Geology and Geography, led members of the student caving club, WVU Student Grotto, on a new study abroad trip to Cuba in May 2018. The students traveled as part of Perez’s National Science Foundation-funded field study to examine how and why Cuban and U.S. cave explorers and scientists, or speleologists, collaborate under tense political climates.
