Think before you click: Understand how cookies affect your online privacy

Computer

Computers can’t predict your interests, but cookies can. These small data files track your online activities, leading to those eerily accurate ads. While it’s easy to click “accept all,” remember that cookies can keep you logged in, monitor your browsing and target you with ads.

During Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services offers these tips on cookies:

  • Your privacy matters. Before you share your habits and interests with strangers, consider what value that might have to an app or online service. How might they use your information?

  • Expect more ads. Your browsing data is valuable. Companies may sell it or use it to market more products to you.

  • It’s OK to say no. If possible, continue without accepting all cookies. Only accept necessary ones and regularly clear them using your browser's privacy settings. Apple products, Safari, Firefox, Google and Microsoft all provide instructions.

  • Opt out. Use YourAdChoices to avoid internet-based targeting by certain participating ad servers. In addition, on your iPhone or Android, you can change your device settings to control whether you see online interest-based ads.

  • Use an ad blocker. Tools like uBlock Origin can block tracking cookies and scripts, providing an additional layer of privacy.
