The Internal Revenue Service has warned of an ongoing IRS-impersonation scam that appears to primarily target educational institutions who have “.edu” email addresses. The suspect emails display the IRS logo and use various subject lines such as “Tax Refund Payment” or “Recalculation of Your Tax Refund Payment.” The emails ask individuals to click a link and submit additional information to claim their refund.
WVU Tax Services and Information Security Services reminds all students and employees that the IRS would never contact you via email requesting personal information. If you would receive one of these emails, you should not click the link nor provide any information including your Social Security Number or other personal identification information.
Additional information regarding the announcement from the IRS, including how to report a scam email to the IRS can be found on the IRS website. Questions or reporting of a scam email can also be submitted to DefendYourData@mail.wvu.edu.
