The Northern West Virginia Center for Independent Living is an official partner of the WVU Center for Service and Learning. NWVCIL’s mission is to educate and empower communities and people with disabilities so everyone has equal opportunity and freedom of choice. It’s vision is that people with disabilities are valued and fulfilled contributors to their communities. Those communities are barrier-free and differences are no longer perceived as disabilities.
NWVCIL is a consumer directed organization that is guided by the individuals they serve. NWVCIL seeks board members to assist with sustainability, strategic planning, resource development, and community education on building inclusive communities where all are welcomed and valued. Board member responsibilities are to ensure NWVCIL remains responsive to those they serve. Additionally, board members are expected to promote the independent living philosophy of consumer control regarding decision making service delivery, management, policies and procedures, participate in and contribute to resource development, participate in outreach and advocacy efforts and monitor compliance with federal standards under Title VII of the Rehabilitation Act. To ensure the center is directed by those served, 51% of the board must be individuals with disabilities. There is currently a need for individuals with interest in civil and human rights, business plan development, advocacy and resource development. The length of the term may be up to three years.
To apply, complete the Board Member Application and submit to Executive Director, Jan Derry at jderry@nwvcil.org. Learn more about NWVCIL by visiting our website or by calling 304.296.6091.
