Donna Hoylman Peduto, an experienced educator and long-time expert in educational policy in West Virginia, has been named executive director of the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative. The WVPEC was convened three years ago by WVU President Gordon Gee and Dr. Suzanne Shipley, then president of Shepherd University. Peduto’s first move is to provide support for the WVPEC, made possible by a new partnership between West Virginia University and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
Economics Professor Brad Humphreys will deliver a public lecture on “Some Inconvenient Facts About the Economics of Sports in America” Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. as part of the 2016-2017 Benedum Lecture Series. The lecture will take place in the Milano Room of the WVU Downtown Library, with an accompanying public reception to follow.
Martina Angela Caretta, assistant professor in Geography, authored a UNESCO report on water and migration focusing on youth and gender as two factors affecting the migratory process from water scarce countries. The report is part of the World Water Assessment Program.
Nearly 80 percent of residents in Monroe County, W.Va. rely on local springs along Peters Mountain as their water source, whether it’s through their own private well or a public water service. Emily Bausher, a student in the geology master of science program at West Virginia University, and her adviser, associate professor of geology Dorothy Vesper, are measuring the quantity and quality of the water along Peters Mountain in collaboration with the Indian Creek Watershed Association.
The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute will continue its four-part Research Boot Camp series focusing on systematic review. For the next entry in this series, Laurie Theeke, Ph.D., R.N., associate professor with the WVU School of Nursing, will present “Developing Clinical Questions and Planning for Your Systematic Review.”
