In an op-ed for the Charleston Gazette-Mail, President Benson reflected on his first year while looking to the future.
“As I mark my first anniversary as president of West Virginia University, I am measuring the eventful and exhilarating previous year through the people I’ve met: the thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, supporters, and other members of the WVU community with stakes in our collective future.
“So many of you have opened your businesses, homes, and arms to my family and me with warm welcomes, sharing the pride you have in your communities as you build your lives in ‘Almost Heaven.’
“We are so thankful to be here with you.
“Since 1867, WVU has been helping people access opportunity, whether through education, healthcare, research, or outreach.
“From the historic WVU baseball run at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha to the World Cup with its global unity under many flags, the entire world is now getting a glimpse of what we know here, whether we’re traveling along or singing about “country roads.” West Virginia is more than a place — it’s a feeling rooted in authenticity and belonging that we carry in our hearts.
“With so many people tuned in, let’s build on that momentum and go forward together.”
