Christine Schimmel, associate professor of counseling, has been appointed as the new WVU faculty ombudsperson for the 2022-23 academic year. Selected through an internal, University-wide search process by a committee with representatives from the WVU Faculty Senate and the Provost’s Office, Schimmel will provide confidential and informal assistance to all faculty members across the University community.

All new faculty members are invited to join the Office of the Provost for an overview of Digital Measures and the usage of the system Aug. 16 from 1-3 p.m. Faculty may attend in person at 101 NRCEE on the Evansdale Campus or online via Zoom.
After just one year of partnering with a national program aimed at improving first-generation student success, WVU’s FirstGen Initiatives are being awarded the First-gen Forward designation. The designation comes from the Center for First-Generation Student Success, an initiative of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation. With this designation, WVU has access to additional professional development opportunities, community-building experiences, research and resources to bolster WVU’s first-gen programming.
Prioritizing student success outcomes as part of the University’s ongoing Academic Transformation efforts, the Office of the Provost has named Joy Carr as the first director of University Advising, effective today (Aug. 1). In this role, Carr will work with advising experts across campus to identify and adopt best practices in academic advising and unify processes across the WVU system to help improve student retention, persistence and graduation rates.
The Office of the Provost is accepting nominations of candidates for honorary doctoral degrees at West Virginia University that will be awarded at Commencement exercises in May 2023. The Provost invites all members of the University community — faculty, staff, students and alumni — to consider nominating exceptional people who have made outstanding contributions to their field and society. We are looking for a robust pool of candidates who represent a diverse range of ideas, expertise and lived experiences.
The Country Roads Scholars Tour, an annual Mountain State outreach trip from the Provost’s Office and WVU Extension, is back out this summer, making stops in Kanawha County and Clay County.
