WVU has received a $300,000 West Virginia Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs grant to support students from select high schools in 10 West Virginia counties. Programming will help support students’ academic, financial, and personal transition from high school to college.
This fal, 94 first-year students from eligible schools in the following counties: Boone, Fayette, Mason, Mercer, Mingo, Nicholas, Summers, Wirt, Webster and Wyoming counties. The WV GEAR UP program is administered by the Office of Student Success in the Center for Learning, Advising and Student Success.
“This grant enables us to provide monthly programming to help these students develop strong study habits and connect them to WVU resources,” said Regan Bruni, director of Student Success. “We are excited to assist this particular population of students. Giving them a strong foundation will ease their transition to college and put them on a solid path to graduation.”
Sarah Powell coordinates the program.
“The accomplishments of these students are already incredible,” Powell said. “I am excited to be a part of their support system as they discover and pursue their passion here at WVU.”
This is a two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. In addition to WVU-Morgantown, WV GEAR UP grants were awarded to WVU-Beckley, Marshall University, Bluefield State College, Concord University, and Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College.
