With a national reputation as a leader in rare earth extraction research, West Virginia University is poised to take another step in developing a domestic supply of rare earth minerals that are critical to national defense and U.S. economic security.

TransEnergy Conference  

Researchers and entrepreneurs pitching energy innovations they hope will change the world! That’s what’s happening at the 2017 TransTech EnergyBusiness Development Conference Oct. 24-25 at the Hilton Garden Inn-Southpointe near Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Innovators from West Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region will pitch technologies for increasing battery storage, capturing energy from ambient radio frequency waves and building vibrations, converting grease trap waste to biofuel, and more.

Best Poster Awards  

The Intelligent Forensics, Biometrics and Security lab (www.ifbis.org), under the leadership of Afzel Noore, has been recognized for innovative biometrics research and won two best poster awards at the International Joint Conference on Biometrics held in Denver this month. This prestigious conference on biometrics combines two major biometrics research annual conferences, the IEEE International Conference on Biometrics: Theory, Applications and Systems and the IAPR International Conference on Biometrics.

Horses in a feild  

Members of the West Virginia Collegiate Horsemen’s Association will host Halloween with the Horses Oct. 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the J.W. Ruby Research farm in Reedsville. This new community event will give families and children the opportunity to visit the farm, meet WVU’s teaching herd and trick-or-treat in a fun and safe atmosphere. The best part? The horses will be dressed in costume. It’s all free and open to the public.

Flying WV  

Economics Professor Brad Humphreys will deliver a public lecture on “Some Inconvenient Facts About the Economics of Sports in America” Thursday (Oct. 12), at 4 p.m. as part of the 2016-2017 Benedum Lecture Series. The lecture will take place in the Milano Room of the Downtown Library, with an accompanying public reception to follow.
