Dr. Timothy J. Blattner  

The University community is invited to attend a colloquium presented by Dr. Timothy J. Blattner, NIST, on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 3:30 p.m. in G09 White Hall. Blattner will speak about "Portable Designs for Performance using the Hybrid Task Graph Scheduler."

Faculty are encouraged to apply to mentor undergraduates in scholarly activity via the SURE program and to inform their undergraduates that SURE applications are now open (Feb. 28 application deadline). SURE is a paid undergraduate research experience for students interested in graduate school and research/creative work within their discipline or a related discipline. 2018 SURE program dates are May 29-July 27.

 

Dr. Heather Stephens, Assistant Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at WVU will be presenting. Stephens said, " it appears that labor force participation is important to explaining higher levels of employment growth in rural areas, for persistently distressed regions, finding ways to increase labor force participation may be a critical step toward increasing economic prosperity."

For the petrochemical industry to grow in the Appalachian Basin, it is important for the natural gas liquids found in the Utica and Marcellus shale gas plays in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to be immediately available. Creating a strong infrastructure for the industry is important, including NGL storage, trading and pipeline infrastructure.

Tofazzal Islam  

Ecological chemist, educator and author Tofazzal Islam, professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University In Bangladesh, will present "Field pathogenomics and open data sharing approaches for rapid determination of genetic identity and origin of emerging fungal diseases: a case study on wheat blast" at 4 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 18) in 4004 Agricultural Sciences.
