The WVU Cancer Institute will begin enrolling its first patients in a National Institute of Health Beau Biden Moonshot Initiative trial on Oct. 25 as part of a consortium of six U.S. healthcare systems with the goal of integrating the use of patient-reported outcomes into the routine practice of oncology.

The Research Office and the Libraries Research Commons will launch a new partnership with “Software Carpentry – Basic Python Workshop,” a two-day, hands-on workshop that covers the software program Python, on Oct. 26-27.
In a recent study, researcher Amna Umer explored how low birth weight correlates to cardiovascular risk factors in childhood. She and her colleagues assessed data of 20,000 fifth-graders born in West Virginia. They discovered that if children had a low birth weight, they were more likely to exhibit cardiovascular risk factors in fifth grade.
“Dispelling the Myths about Open Access: Making Informed Choices about Open Access Publishing Opportunities” is a free Research Commons workshop that will define characteristics of open access vs. traditional publishing venues, discuss ways to evaluate open access journal quality, including the identification of predatory journals; list tools available to find an appropriate journal in which to publish and discuss ways in which WVU Libraries is supporting WVU authors to publish in open access journals.
West Virginia University students will be able to help ensure space travel is safe for future explorers thanks to the continuation of a long-standing partnership with NASA announced last week. NASA approved a contract of up to $24.9 million for support services at the agency’s Katherine Johnson Independent Verification & Validation facility in Fairmont.
