The Research Office and the Libraries Research Commons will launch a new partnership with “Software Carpentry – Basic Python Workshop,” a two-day, hands-on workshop that covers the software program Python, on Oct. 26-27.

“WVU is committed to expanding resources for big data analysis,” said Sheena Murphy, associate vice president for Research Development. “These workshops are just one piece of a larger effort to provide more comprehensive data tools for students and staff.”

The goal of Software Carpentry is to help researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This Python course, aimed at graduate students and other researchers, will cover basic concepts and tools using Python, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation.

Previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented is not necessary, but participants must bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) on which they have administrative privileges. Also, they should have a few specific software packages installed (listed here).

Penny Pugh, head of Research Services, said the Software Carpentry workshops “align perfectly with the Libraries’ vision of the Research Commons, as a place and suite of services to support graduate student research and foster interdisciplinary connections.”

The workshop will be held Oct. 26-27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days in the Downtown Campus Library, Room 104. Registration is required: https://ncf0003.github.io/2019-10-26-wvu/. Please email ncf0003@mix.wvu.edu for more information

Planning is underway for future Software Carpentry workshops, covering different data analysis programs.
