Sierra Viands, a junior exercise physiology major from Charles Town, was awarded a Study Abroad Grant worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Viands is one of 25 students nationwide to receive the award. Viands will use the grant to study abroad in Santarém, Brazil.

One isn’t just the loneliest number. It may also be the unhealthiest. New research led by Laurie Theeke, a professor and nurse practitioner in the School of Nursing, suggests that loneliness may be making it harder for middle-aged Appalachians to manage chronic conditions, such as diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure.

Senior women’s soccer defender Bianca St. Georges has been named the Google Cloud Academic All-America of the Year for Division I women's soccer, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. An exercise physiology major with a 4.00 grade point average, St. Georges, a two-time team captain, is the second WVU women's soccer player to earn Academic All-America of the Year honors in six seasons, as Frances Silva garnered the accolade in 2013.

Twenty-year men's basketball assistant coach Gary McPherson died Wednesday evening (Dec. 5), according to a Facebook post made by his daughter, Missy. McPherson's affiliation with West Virginia University spanned 40 years until his retirement in 2013.
