In celebration of Digital Learning Day today (Feb. 28), the Office of the Provost has announced the first faculty recipients of the university’s inaugural Digital Learning Awards. Recipients will receive a professional development honorarium and participate in a panel discussion on digital learning best practices at CELEBRATE in May.
“This year’s faculty award winners promote best-practice digital learning across the university and in diverse disciplines,” said Vice Provost John Campbell. “In doing so, they do not merely incorporate technology in the classroom. They also ensure access for more students, enhance learning and make the material they teach more exciting.”
This year’s award recipients are:

Laurel Cook, assistant professor of Marketing
Matthew Heap, assistant professor of Music Composition and Theory
Aimee Morewood, associate professor of Literacy Education
Afrin Naz, regional co-director, Center for Excellence in STEM Education
Amy Schissel, assistant professor of Painting
Keri Valentine, assistant professor of Mathematics Education
Established in 2012 by Alliance for Excellent Education and inspired by a digital learning challenge day at Mountainview Elementary School in Morgantown, DLD celebrates instructional practices that effectively use technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience, emphasizing high-quality instruction and access to challenging content to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career.
WVU is one of the earliest higher education supporters of DLD, participating in a video produced about the Mountainview Elementary School digital learning challenge back in 2012. WVU is also one of the first higher education institutions to host organized activities on DLD. At WVU, DLD is championed by the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative, which is committed to advancing public schools from early childhood through higher education.
