The Department of English will host Don James McLaughlin, an assistant professor of 19th-century American literature at the University of Tulsa, as he presents “In the Doghouse: Phobia’s Metaphor in Early American Politics” at 4 p.m. April 6 in Colson Hall, Room 130.

McLaughlin’s recent book, “Phobia and American Literature, 1705–1937: A Therapeutic History,” offers a field-shaping intervention into the ways that the power of metaphor can mold and shape human experience — from medical discourses to public health — through the lens of literature.
