Katrina Stewart, senior engaged teaching scholar with the WVU Teaching and Learning Center, is hosting a workshop series this fall for new graduate teaching assistants. Registration is required and those who attend a workshop will receive a letter of participation suitable for inclusion in a teaching portfolio.
Faculty members are asked to encourage their GTAs to register. While these workshops are geared towards new GTAs, anyone interested in these topics may register.
Preparing for a successful first day of class
In this hands-on workshop, evidence-based methods will be shared for a successful first day of class. Designed with graduate teaching assistants in mind, the discussion will focus on approaches for creating a welcoming learning environment, facilitating a first day of class activity, and setting students up for success.
This workshop aims to help with confidence in communicating course expectations, course policies, and the expected learning outcomes with students.
Teaching assistants, faculty members, instructors, and instructional staff are welcome to attend, and are asked to bring laptops to workshop sessions.

Developing your teaching persona and classroom presence
Designed with graduate teaching assistants in mind, this hands-on workshop will provide actionable strategies for public speaking, effective presentation of instructional content, and classroom management. Discussion will focus on setting healthy boundaries, with the goal of fostering student self-regulation and organization.
The session concludes with an opportunity to draft a “Mini Teaching Philosophy” which can be used as teaching personas change shape over time.
