Data privacy starts with strong security. During Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services recommends these steps to secure your personal devices and accounts:
Lock your devices and don’t leave them unattended. Use a passcode or biometric authentication like fingerprints or facial recognition.
Use strong authentication. Create long, unique passwords for each account and enable multi-factor authentication when possible. Consider a password manager such as Keeper.
Install antivirus software and turn on automatic updates for apps, browsers and operating systems. WVU offers free Sophos antivirus for up to three personal devices.
Check privacy and security settings monthly. Apps often default to collecting more data than necessary. Turn off camera, microphone and location unless essential. The National Cybersecurity Alliance has a helpful Manage Your Privacy Settings page.
Use a VPN. A Virtual Private Network encrypts your internet connection, especially on public Wi-Fi. Consider using reputable VPN services like NordVPN for your personal devices.
Limit app downloads. Only install apps from official stores and verify the developer’s credibility. Periodically review and delete apps you no longer use.
