September marks National Suicide Prevention Month and the Faculty Staff Assistance Program would like to remind employees of available resources.
Suicide is a topic that is hard to discuss for some, but thoughts of suicide can be more common than you think. Estimates are one in 20 adults in the U.S. have had these kinds of thoughts. It’s likely we all know someone who has suffered this way making conversation about it important. You could be the difference in connecting someone to help.
Checking in on our friends, family and colleagues is critical, especially if we are worried about their mental health.
The good news is many mental health conditions, including thoughts of suicide, are recoverable.
FSAP is one available resource to access confidential mental health services for employees and their dependents. The staff includes licensed clinicians who are available to meet in person or via telehealth.
WVU employees are eligible for three sessions annually, which can include assessments, counseling and referrals to community providers. Medical residents and fellows are eligible for additional appointments.
If you are concerned about a colleague, refer to a suicide prevention and response protocol.
FSAP is available during business hours at 304-293-5590, and the National Suicide and Crisis Line is available 24/7 for calls or texts at 988.
