As previously announced, WVU will complete its system-wide transition to Zoom Phone by July 1, 2026.
Late last year, ITS began working with business officers and unit leaders across the University to determine what phone numbers each unit would retain after the transition. These decisions were made at the college or department level.
Earlier this year, ITS and the Beckley and Keyser campuses successfully completed the transition. Next, ITS will migrate academic units, followed by administrative units. Due to the complexity of its environment, the Health Sciences area of campus will migrate last.
In the coming weeks, employees designated by their departments to retain a phone line will be provisioned in Zoom Phone. Once that occurs, these users will begin to see some phone features and functions in their Zoom Workplace app. However, external calling will not be enabled until their unit completes its full migration.
Unit points of contact can expect to receive a 30-day notice before their scheduled migration. To prepare for the move to Zoom Phone or to view a pre-recorded training, review this article in the IT Help Center.
Zoom Phone eliminates the need for physical phones, though departments may choose to purchase them if desired. Instructions for ordering phones are available in the IT Help Center.
Zoom Phone is a full-service, cloud-based calling solution designed to better support a large workforce with many hybrid and fully remote staff. By moving from on-premises Cisco hardware to Software as a Service, WVU will avoid deferred maintenance costs exceeding $1 million.
Telecommunications charges have been frozen at current rates until the transition to Zoom Phone is complete.
