Transition to Zoom Phone is underway, training available this spring

The previously announced system-wide transition to Zoom Phone is underway, with successful pilots and migrations in ITS and on the Beckley and Keyser campuses.

Zoom Phone will replace our decades-old Cisco platform. By moving from on-premises hardware to Software as a Service, WVU will avoid deferred maintenance costs exceeding $1 million.

Units on the Morgantown Campus will transition next, starting with academic units, followed by administrative units. Due to the complexity of its environment, the Health Sciences Center campus will migrate last. Units can expect to receive a 30-day notice before their migration.

Zoom Phone eliminates the need for physical phones, but departments may choose to purchase desk phones if desired. The phones will be available for purchase in Mountaineer Marketplace in the coming weeks, with prices ranging from approximately $185 to $265 per unit.

Note that this price covers the purchase of the physical phone and does not include associated phone line charges on a unit’s telecommunications bill, which have been frozen at current rates until the transition to Zoom Phone is complete.

Zoom Phone is a full-service, cloud-based calling solution that will better support a large workforce with many hybrid and fully remote staff. The desktop application also eliminates the need for expensive on-site hardware that must be maintained and periodically replaced.

Anyone who has made a call using Microsoft Teams will find Zoom Phone easy to use, and Zoom Phone fully integrates with existing WVU Microsoft 365 services for a nearly seamless experience.
