WVU Login accounts moving to new platform June 1, review your recovery email ASAP

WVU is replacing its current identity management platform with Okta, a new product that will reduce costs and complexity, and gradually improve the single sign-on experience.

Over the coming months, this change will streamline access to WVU services by granting permission based on your role with the University.

All existing WVU Login accounts will be moved into Okta June 1. Most faculty, staff and students will not need to take any action until it is your regularly scheduled time to change your password.

However, processes in Okta will require the use of a personal, non-WVU email account.

Go to login.wvu.edu before May 30, select “manage account,” then “profile” to ensure that you have a valid recovery email address on file. If not, create one or Change Your Recovery Contact Information.

After June 1, all new accounts will be activated in Okta, and all password resets will be done in Okta. You will continue to receive password expiration notices starting at 15 days in your WVU email account, but after June 1, they will direct you to okta.wvu.edu. Duo two-factor authentication will remain in place for now.

The transition to Okta will affect everyone with WVU Login credentials on all campuses, including those with @hsc, @mix and @mail accounts. This also includes admitted students, Research Corp. employees, sponsored accounts, WVU Foundation employees, emeritus faculty and staff, non-emeritus retirees with a @retiree.wvu.edu account, and former students and alumni with active MIX (Google Workspace) accounts.

Here are some key things to keep in mind about the June 1 transition:

  • Login.wvu.edu will be redirected automatically to the Okta platform.

  • New employees and students will no longer claim accounts at login.wvu.edu. Instead, they will receive instructions in their personal email accounts.

  • You won’t be able to print out 10 Duo two-factor authentication backup codes. This functionality does not exist in Okta.

  • The WVUID Lookup feature will remain available, but you will need to use a direct link, https://login.wvu.edu/self-service/lookup.

  • Password-expiration reminders will include your WVUID number.

  • Information will be updated frequently through 2025, so units that maintain their own WVU Login instructions should point to the IT Help Center.

This fall, WVU will transition from Duo Security to Okta’s integrated multi-factor authentication app — Okta Verify. However, you will continue to use Duo until Oct. 1 because most WVU applications and services require that form of authentication.
