Members of the University community are among the candidates selected for the Morgantown Citizens Academy, a program designed to give citizens a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the city departments and how to effectively engage their local government through interactive, hands-on activities and discussions.

WVU participants include the following:

  • Nathan Garrett, teaching assistant professor in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics.

  • Monica Moses, outreach coordinator at the WVU Knee Regulatory Research Center.

  • Christian Schaupp, professor in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics.

  • Erica Steratore, assistant vice president for the WVU Innovation Corporation.

In addition to the 20 candidates, the City of Morgantown has partnered with the Center for Community Engagement to offer select spots to students. Students may choose to receive course credit as part of their participation and initiative to learn more about the city.

The inaugural WVU student representatives include Kendrick Fish, a senior chemistry major, and Helene Nguemgaing, a doctoral student in the Division of Resource Economics and Management.

All participants will have the chance to engage with various city departments and other community partners to learn firsthand about their operations and services. Community partners include the Morgantown Parking Authority, Morgantown Utility Board, Morgantown Area Partnership, Main Street Morgantown, Visit Mountaineer Country CVB, BOPARC and the Morgantown Municipal Library.

Classes will begin April 10 and will conclude with a graduation ceremony during the June City Council meeting slated for June 17.
