Honors College launches new experiential learning program

WV Let's Go Flag

The Honors College is launching a new program that allows students to gain knowledge, skills and expertise outside the classroom while earning digital, shareable microcredentials.

Centered around experiential learning, Honors in Action is designed for sophomore and junior students interested in developing career readiness through real-world experiences and reflection.

“This combination of career readiness and experiential learning will allow Honors College students to find impactful careers, a curiosity in lifelong learning and make meaningful contributions to their communities,” Clarissa Estep, director of Honors in Action, said.

Honors in Action is open to all WVU students with a 3.4 or higher GPA. Current Honors College students can apply during their second year in the Honors Foundations program. Other WVU students can apply during their junior year.

Within the program, students can create their own pathways to success by completing the required Career Ready badge and any of the following four multi-level badges:

  • Research

  • Global

  • Internship

  • Service

  • Creative

“Each badge has three levels — white, blue and gold — that allows students to either focus on a particular area or complete a breadth of qualifying activities,” Estep said.

Badges are awarded through Suitable, an engagement platform that allows students to build an e-portfolio of digital badges to feature on resumes and social media, particularly LinkedIn.

“The digital footprint provided through Suitable enables students to conveniently showcase their skills and competencies developed through the experiential learning process,” she said.

Honors in Action replaces the Honors EXCEL program which graduates its final class this May.

Students must complete the program application.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
