An employee’s guide to Talent and Culture, Shared Services

Talent and Culture and Shared Services have partnered to better clarify the unique roles of each team in supporting University employees, including the purpose of each unit, how services differ and overlapping responsibilities. 

The following information has been provided to help employees contact the team that will best support their needs.

Talent and Culture

The Talent and Culture unit is singularly responsible for the University’s human resources strategic programs, processes and services.

The unit provides strategic HR support services for the University across the following five pillars:

  • Workforce planning and capabilities

  • Talent excellence

  • Recognition and rewards

  • HR operational excellence 

  • Culture

Shared Services

The Shared Services unit provides customer service and process management support for the University’s financial management, sponsored project financial management and limited HR transactional needs.

The team aims to streamline administrative functions for efficiency and consistency purposes.

Responsibilities

Talent and Culture serves as the strategic leader of the University’s HR life cycle as its teams work to plan for, hire, grow and evolve our talented workforce.

Our teams also provide a variety of employee services, manage recognition programs and ensure the University is fostering an environment for employees to thrive. 

Teams include the following:

  • Benefits and Compensation

  • Employee Relations and Investigations

  • Medical Management

  • Leadership, Staff and Organizational Development

  • Onboarding and Offboarding

  • Performance Management and Reviews

  • Strategic Human Resources Partners

  • Talent Acquisition and Recruitment

  • HR Compliance and Governance

  • HR Data, Analytics and Reporting

Meanwhile, Shared Services assists faculty, staff and students with administrative needs throughout their WVU journey, which can include:

  • Customer service

Our customer care team serves as the initial point of contact for all faculty, staff and students reaching out on a variety of topics. The team directs individuals to resources within our “SSC Knowledgebase” to address inquiries.

The unit also serves as a liaison among faculty, staff and students to connect their inquiries with the appropriate specialist or Center of Expertise (i.e., Talent and Culture, Payroll, PCPS and Student Employment)

  • Workforce administration

Workforce administration provides support from timecards to leave administration concerns and employee data management

  • Salesforce system management

  • Annual Notice of Appointment process administration

  • Unemployment claim processing

Overlapping responsibilities

At different points in the University’s HR life cycle, the Shared Services unit provides customer service and process-based support, lending a helping hand to Talent and Culture along the way.

Examples include the following:

  • Front-end new hire support, which includes administrative job posting, systems entry, background check, electronic onboarding and offboarding (separations) support.

  • Payroll service support, which includes ongoing payroll management and timecard submission support.

  • Benefits election and enrollment support.

  • Virtual employee file management.
