On Thursday (Dec. 19), Gov. Jim Justice issued two proclamations declaring Tuesday (Dec. 24) and Tuesday, Dec. 31, as full-day state holidays for public employees.
Since WVU already observes Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 as holidays, the University has modified its holiday calendar and will combine the two extended half-day state holidays to observe them on Friday, Dec. 27.
As a result, WVU will be closed on Dec. 27.
These closures include WVU Tech, Potomac State College, and WVU Research Corp. WVU Extension employees on WVU payroll are included, as well as Jackson’s Mill. WVU Extension personnel on county payrolls should consult their county supervisors.
Winter intersession courses are not subject to this holiday closure and will continue as scheduled. Some essential campus services will remain open. WVU Health Sciences faculty, staff and students who are working in patient care areas or in clinical rotations should check with their dean, program director or clinic manager.
The closure will be effective for personnel on Dec. 27 from midnight to 11:59 p.m. Some employees will be contacted by their supervisor with additional information regarding a holiday work schedule to support ongoing campus services. Employees with questions or concerns should contact their supervisor.
To be eligible for the Dec. 27 holiday, employees must:
Be benefits-eligible and active on WVU payroll on Dec. 27;
Not be in a terminal annual leave status; and
Work their full shift or have enough paid leave to cover any amount of time absent on the working day prior to and immediately following the holiday.
The Dec. 27 holiday will be paid at regular straight-time pay. For a full-time employee, that is 7.5 hours. The holiday pay/hours are pro-rated by FTE for employees who are less than full-time.
Employees who have already requested annual leave on Dec. 27 and are off campus should connect to the VPN before accessing the Applaud system to cancel their leave. The ITS team anticipates an influx of users in the Applaud system as a result of this announcement. If you experience technical difficulties, please be patient and try again momentarily.
