Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid teaches individuals how to assist others experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is available or the crisis is resolved.
Attendees can expect to learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for additional support.
Training will consist of two hours of self-guided online learning that must be completed prior to an instructor-led session. The virtual, instructor-led portion will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18.
Participants will need to complete self-guided learning, attend and participate in the instructor-led session and complete brief post-work to obtain certification, which is valid for three years.
This training is open to all community members. The cost of attendance is $40 per participant, with a discounted rate of $25 for current WVU employees and students.
WVU employees should check with their supervisors or department for attendance sponsorship. Pending approval, 7.5 continuing education hours for West Virginia licensed social workers will be available at an additional cost of $40.
