Art Museum of WVU reopens with new exhibitions, lobby mural

Pop Art

An opening reception for the “Off Kilter, On Point: Art of the 1960s” exhibition will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday (Jan. 26). The exhibition highlights the breadth and depth of mid-century artworks in the permanent collection of the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art at Colorado State University.

The exhibition showcases a wide range of media and styles, from abstraction to pop art, and presents novel juxtapositions that reflect the tumult and innovations of their time, exhibiting most of the major stylistic trends in art of the 1960s in the United States and Europe.

The Art Museum of WVU, in conjunction with the new exhibition, will present its own collection created during the 1960s and early 1970s. The works in this exhibition complement those in “Off Kilter” and enrich the dialogue surrounding creative production in this turbulent era, which bore witness to profound social, political and technological transformations.

The prints, paintings, sculptures and photographs included in this exhibition show artists responding to their time with inventive explorations of diverse media and styles.

The McGee Gallery rotates every fall and spring with new thematic exhibitions drawn from the Art Museum’s holdings of more than 4,000 objects in diverse mediums.
