You’re invited to help West Virginia University turn parts of the PRT stations into works of art.
Beginning today (Oct. 27) and continuing through Wednesday (Nov. 2), students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the larger University community are invited to vote for an overall theme for PRT station murals created by students.
Since opening in 1975, the PRT has provided more than 83 million passenger trips. Each day, the PRT transports about 15,000 riders and serves as the University’s primary mass transit system for students, employees and visitors.
This is an opportunity to bring some color and inspiration to riders as they pass through station spaces on their way to class, work or other destinations.
Over time, each of the stations — Walnut, Beechurst, Engineering, Towers and Health Sciences — will have a mural that ties into a larger theme.
Which of the following proposed themes is your favorite?
Purpose
Finding purpose is a journey, not a destination. In colors of gold and blue, pursuits of purpose are illustrated, encouraging those passing by to consider their larger “why?” as they move through their daily activities.
Values
The University values of Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability and Appreciation are illustrated separately through murals at each station using a WVU-inspired color palette, challenging PRT riders to think about what it means to truly be a Mountaineer.
Icons and Traditions
The facade of Woodburn Hall, the Mountaineer’s coonskin cap, the Flying WV, pepperoni rolls and other University icons are illustrated with bold colors, patterns and textures, a reminder of the unique items that unite Mountaineer Nation.
Only one vote is allowed per person during the voting period which begins today and continues through Wednesday (Nov. 2).
The winning theme will be announced during Mountaineer Week, along with the proposal application process, project guidelines and timeline.
Students will work with the University's Public Art Committee to create and paint the first mural starting in the spring.
