As part of efforts to ensure we continue to attract and retain top talent and remain competitive with current market rates, West Virginia University has adjusted its entry pay rate for staff employees to $12 an hour, effective. Aug. 1.
WVU also is reviewing the salaries of current employees in similarly situated positions in an effort to reduce instances of wage compression and salary inversion.
Wage compression occurs when an employee who has been in a job for some time makes less than new hires in the same position. Salary inversion refers to situations in which the starting salaries for new hires increase faster than those for existing employees.
The entry rate increase program applies to classified employees who currently fall between pay grades 6 and 8. Employees currently in pay grades 6 through 8 will receive an increase to $12 an hour or 5-7%, whichever is greater. Additional review for those employees who approach the maximum of their pay range will be considered.
The program also applies to those classified employees in pay grades 9 and 10 who currently make less than $12 an hour. The minimum rate for employees currently in pay grades 9 and 10 will be increased to $12 an hour.
The entry rate increase program does not apply to student workers, who will continue to be paid at the rate determined by the department or unit in which they are employed.
Note: Employees must have an overall rating higher than "Development Needed" in their most recent performance review to be eligible for the program. Further, employees must not be on active discipline. For classified employees, this means the employee must not be on active discipline at a second letter of warning or higher.
Any salary adjustments for eligible employees became effective Aug. 1, and updated wages will be reflected on an employee’s paycheck on Aug. 27.
New hires will be brought in at the new entry rate ($12 an hour), effective Aug. 1.
