New registration waitlist system

West Virginia University downtown campus, red brick buildings

In order to serve its students better, WVU is piloting a new process with registration for summer and fall 2021 with waitlists. In this pilot, if a student is trying to register for a closed section of one of the pilot courses, there will be an option to sign up for a waitlist.  Should a seat become available in that section, the student will be notified and will have 24 hours to register for that seat, before it goes to the next student on the waitlist.

Important facts about how the process will work:

  • Signing up for a waitlist for a section of a course does not guarantee that you will be able to register.

  • It is always safer to register for a seat in an open section of a course than to sign up for a waitlist in a preferred full section.

  • Waitlists are only available after a section is full.

  • If you have signed up for a waitlist and a seat becomes available, you will have 24 hours to register. If you do not register, your name will be removed from the list and will be offered to the next student. You can then re-add your name to the bottom of the list, should you wish to do so.

  • You cannot be registered for one section of a course and be on the waitlist for another section of that same course.

  • If you do not have the prerequisite for a class, you will be removed from the waitlist.

  • You must sign up for a waitlist through STAR, the option in Schedule Builder is not available.

  • In the pilot for summer and fall 2021 semesters, waitlisting is only available for all sections of basic courses in biology, chemistry, English, geology, mathematics, and physics.  Once we have perfected the system, waitlists will be more widely available.
