WVU alumnus and alt-rock artist Tristan Miller’s original song “Drive” will be featured on Go 1st Records’ first annual compilation album to be released in March. Seven artists from WVU and the Morgantown community will also be included on the album produced by Go 1st Records, a student-run record label under the WVU School of Music’s Mon Hills Music Group.
Miller’s musical journey began thanks to his mom’s boyfriend. “On weekends we’d watch him and his old roommate jam,” Miller said. Prompted by the angst of bands like Nirvana and Green Day, he eventually picked up the guitar and it has been a passionate affair ever since, and soon after, he began writing songs. The dynamic artist from Charles Town found himself in many roles throughout the years to include a guitarist for Tensions Rising in Damascus, Maryland; a drummer for Not My Vice in Washington, D.C.; and a singer for Oxford Comma in Morgantown.
Now, Miller is writing songs every day, whether it’s for his solo project or for mainstream pop outfit High Charity. “A songwriting spree usually occurs after I hear a new band I really like,” Miller said. “I just listen to a song and try to remake it a few times.” These days he is influenced by The Strokes, Alvvays, Joey Bada$$ and the Arctic Monkeys.
