2020 Performance Review process postponed

At WVU, we believe every member of the Mountaineer family plays a critical part in bringing our land-grant mission to life through their individual roles, responsibilities and results.

And in a year unlike any other, we have seen countless examples of employees across our University going above and beyond — often taking on roles and responsibilities outside of their typical job duties — to support our campus community and help us navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coaching and performance feedback are essential elements of the employer‐employee relationship. And the annual performance review process for classified and non-classified staff and certain FE/AP employees is one of the ways to measure an employee’s capabilities, accomplishments, development and overall contributions to the University.

However, the Division of Talent and Culture decided in early June to postpone the performance review process due to the unusual circumstances (e.g., alternative work arrangements and temporary furloughs) our institution was facing at that time as a result of COVID-19.

Our goal was to roll out the performance review process in the fall —  at a time when we hoped our campus operations would be closer to normal.

As you know, we continue to face several disruptions and challenges as a result of the ever-changing circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, we have decided to again postpone the annual performance review process until a later date.

We currently are making plans for an alternative timeline for the performance review process and will provide additional updates once a timetable is determined.

We encourage supervisors to continue having regular, meaningful discussions with their team members about their job performance and any goals that were adjusted as work needs changed throughout the last 12 months.

Further, the Employee Relations team is developing some easy-to-use tools and learning topics to assist supervisors in continuing a “performance dialogue” with their direct reports throughout the fall and until the formal performance review process resumes. We will share more on these resources in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we appreciate your understanding and look forward to resuming the regular performance review process as soon as possible. Thank you for continuing to live our Mountaineer Values and for everything you do to move WVU forward during these unusual times.
