For unknown reasons, fireflies have been declining across their range. A formal assessment of fireflies has never been done in our state and the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources needs your help.
Most can recall seeing the majestic flashing displays of fireflies while growing up in West Virginia, and amazingly, there are between 23-41 species of fireflies. Each male species has its own unique flash while the females are rarely seen.
