West Virginia University Press has won its second consecutive Weatherford Award for outstanding nonfiction book in Appalachian studies, for Appalachian Reckoning, edited by Anthony Harkins and Meredith McCarroll. The press has now won three Weatherford Awards since 2017, and had four finalists.

In a statement from Berea College, which administers the award with the Appalachian Studies Association, Appalachian Reckoning is praised as a book that “rises to confront the moment,” displaying “the region’s rich spectrum of ethnicity and race, economic activity and creativity.”

Appalachian Reckoning was launched in 2019 at an event at WVU, cosponsored with the Appalachian Justice Initiative and the WVU Humanities Center. It has received praise in the New York Times, the Times Literary Supplement, Publishers Weekly, and elsewhere. Press director Derek Krissoff said of the title: “Appalachian Reckoning is a signature book for West Virginia University Press—one that celebrates Appalachia’s diversity and amplifies the voices of the region’s scholars, writers, and activists for audiences around the world. My colleagues and I are enormously grateful to everyone who has contributed to the book’s success, and we’re proud that it’s won the highest honor in the field of Appalachian studies.”
