WVU has been named a bronze-level Bicycle-Friendly UniversitySM by the League of American Bicyclists.
WVU is among 208 colleges and universities in 47 states and the District of Columbia that received the bicycle-friendly designation, and the University is the only academic institution in West Virginia to be recognized.
The League of American Bicyclists evaluates campuses on engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation. And WVU has taken several steps in the past few years to improve its campus for bicyclists and attain the bicycle-friendly designation.
The University has chosen a standard bike rack and currently is updating old racks and adding new rack locations. The WVU Office of Sustainability also has begun surveying students on barriers to and motivations for riding bikes on campus.
Further, WVU recently installed shared lane markings on its Evansdale campus to alert motorists that they should expect cyclists on our roads, share the lane and pass in a safe manner.
“We want to encourage bicycling on campus for the multiple benefits it provides to our environment, the health of our students, faculty and staff, and to relieving traffic congestion,” said Traci Knabenshue, sustainability director in Auxiliary and Business Services. “We are very excited to be recognized, and we want it to be just the first step for bikes being used as a convenient form of transportation across campus. Riding a bike also is just plain fun!”
