Undergraduate research - Institution-wide tracking needed

undergraduate research

The Office of Undergraduate Research needs help in tracking undergraduate research and creative endeavors. Knowing how many undergraduates are involved in research/creative endeavors, now and in the future, will help WVU obtain more funding for undergraduate research activities.

Use Institution Wide-course Numbers: 297 & 497 are institution-wide course number for undergraduate research. UGR uses enrollment in 297 & 497 courses to track the number of undergraduates involved in research institution-wide. We strongly encourage departments and majors to use the 497-course number for undergraduates engaged in research instead of other course numbers, such as 495 (Independent Study). It is easy to add the 497-course number. To begin the process, contact the WVU Office of the Registrar (email: Registrar@mail.wvu.edu) and ask for this course number to be added to the course schedule for your major/subject.

Enter Products of Undergraduate Research in Digital Measures: UGR uses Digital Measures data to track products of research involving undergraduates. For instance, within the “Edit Publication, Research, Intellectual Contributions” tab, faculty are encouraged to provide names for undergraduate co-authors on research/creative products and designate the student’s level as “undergraduate.”

Not sure if something qualifies as undergraduate research? As defined by the Council on Undergraduate Research, undergraduate research is an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.
