Workshop 3 of ‘How People Learn’ series

The Teaching and Learning Commons logo

Understanding how people learn should be at the heart of instructional practice at all levels: when we design our courses and write syllabi, when we plan for class, and in-the-moment pedagogical decisions. This workshop is the final one in a series on big cognitive constructs in the context of our everyday teaching and will focus on Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation and Learning Orientations. It is intended for all WVU community members who teach—faculty, staff, graduate students. Participants are encouraged to bring a syllabus for a course that they teach.

The two-hour session will begin with an hour of exploration of keys topics related to learning theory, followed by an hour-long segment during which facilitators will guide participants in applying concepts to their own practice. Participants can attend both hours or come only to the first hour. The first hour will be webcast.

Hosted by the Teaching and Learning Commons, this workshop will take place April 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 104 of the Downtown Library. Lunch will be served.

Presenters are Malayna Bernstein, Director, Learning Sciences Programs, Department of Learning Sciences and Human Development and John Oughton, Associate Director, Teaching and Learning Commons.
