Rise WVU is a new initiative in the Center for Learning, Advising and Student Success designed to retain students of color, first-generation students, and women in STEM majors.
The focus of the program is to help students make strategic connections that will encourage persistence towards graduation. Niara Campbell, coordinator of the program in the Office of Student Success, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Higher Education Policy Commission to boost the program.
Starting in the Spring 2019 term, students can take a one-credit course coinciding with five different mentoring groups: African American men, African American women, Hispanic and Latino students, women in STEM majors or first-generation students.
Campbell is seeking faculty and staff who would like to mentor a student or share their personal stories to a class during the second eight-week term in the spring. There’s also an opportunity for students to engage with their peers and the community, and earn up to 60 hours of community service through a special service learning course.
