The Office of WVU Veterans Affairs and the Davis College Veteran Professional Organization will host Veterans Welcome Back Weekend for student veterans Aug. 24 and 25. The event is made possible through the generous support of Adventure WV, Boeing and various departments across the University, as well as local businesses.

The event is presented by veterans for veterans and designed to build a sense of community among WVU student veterans and their families and help them learn about the programs and services available to support their transition from the military into college life.

The weekend will begin on Friday, Aug. 24, with a reception for student veterans and their spouses or partners at the WVU Natural Resources Conference Center (formerly the Westvaco Natural Resources Center). Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and bus transportation will be available.

Following the reception, presenters from across campus will host a series of seminars on the resources available at WVU to support student veterans and help them be successful at the University. The seminars also are open to faculty and staff who are interested in learning about WVU’s offerings and how they can support student veterans.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, student veterans and their families are invited to participate in a variety of free activities offered by the Adventure WV Outdoor Education Center at Coopers Rock. Activities will begin at 9 a.m. and include a ropes course, kayaking, mountain biking and more.

Ed Olesh, graduate research assistant at Davis College, said, “We have a lot of grassroots efforts across campus to support student veterans, but many veterans may not be aware of all the programs and resources available to them. The ‘Veterans Welcome Back Weekend’ is designed to bring these offerings together, while helping build a sense of community among student veterans at the same time. I encourage all new and current student veterans to attend the event.”
