Area museums celebrate West Virginia Day

Join the Mountaineer Country Museums at our Celebrate West Virginia! event, a weekend-long celebration of West Virginia Day.

Visit Spark! Imagination and Science Center Thursday (June 21)  from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the Celebrate WV! kickoff. Enjoy live music and participate in hands-on activities and crafts by representatives from museums and historic sites in the community. At the kick-off event, you will receive a “Bingo card” with information on free, family-friendly activities all weekend long.

Celebrate West Virginia! Saturday (June 23) events include a full day of activities. Visit the Watt’s museum from 1 p.m.  to 4 p.m. to learn about the check tag system used in coal mines and design your own Miner's Check tag. Visit Arthurdale from noon to 3 p.m. to slip on vintage aprons, hats and other 1930s clothing and take a selfie, visit the friendly goats, and learn about games that your grandparents played when they were children. Many sites will have scavenger hunts available. These sites include, the Art Museum of WVU from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the West Virginia Regional History Center from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the West Virginia Botanic Garden from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On Sunday (June 24), the celebration continues. Take a tour of the Easton Roller Mill from 2 p.m.  to 5 p.m. and try out a scavenger hunt at the West Virginia Botanic Garden from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Art Museum of WVU from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm.

Pick up a Bingo card at the kickoff event, or at any participating location after June 21, and get it stamped when you participate in a “Celebrate West Virginia!” event. If you visit three or more sites, you can enter to win a prize, a three-month membership to Spark! Imagination and Science Center. Bingo cards must be turned in at a participating location by July 3 to be eligible for prizes. Celebrate West Virginia is organized by Mountaineer Country Museums, whose mission is to support, promote, and develop local historic sites and museums, and to increase community awareness of their value.
