Thank you for making it ‘All Clear for the New Year’

WVU enacted a Record Retention Policy earlier this year to provide employees guidance on the maintenance and retention of records (i.e., documents and other material made or received in connection with WVU's operations).

The policy is designed to help us remain compliant with federal and state laws and regulations related to the retention of records. It also is intended to help us be more efficient by reducing the unnecessary storage of records.

In support of the new policy, the Office of Sustainability organized a large effort - called "All Clear for the New Year" - to collect unwanted documents, hardback and paperback books, journals, periodicals, encyclopedias, pamphlets, etc. across WVU's Morgantown campus.

The results are in for the "All Clear for the New Year" program:

In total, WVU collected and recycled more than 24 total tons of material through the program.

Confidential material comprised approximately 75% of this total, and these documents were shredded at PACE.

The remaining material included bulk paper items, such as books, which were recycled at Resolute Forest Products in Fairmont.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the "All Clear for the New Year" program and made it such a success.

The Office of Sustainability plans to hold purge recycling events for non-confidential bulk paper biannually. Departments needing shredding services on an ongoing basis can visit https://sustainability.wvu.edu/recycling/shredding for details and pricing, or read our record retention policy.
