Prove it's you: Two-factor rollout continues with more 7,000 employees enrolled

About 7,000 employees on all WVU campuses are actively using two-factor authentication, well ahead of the April 27 deadline for everyone to join this critical security initiative.

Two-factor authentication is a second layer of security besides your password. It requires you to confirm your identity with two things - something you know and something you have. Essentially, it's no different than a physical key to a door: If you want access to something WVU considers important, you have to prove it's you to gain that access. No group of employees is exempt.

Anyone who uses a system that requires WVU Login credentials and displays a Central Authentication Service screen must use two-factor. This includes adjunct instructors, emeritus faculty who are actively teaching, and student workers. Students not employed by WVU will be enrolled this fall. Only WVU retirees and alumni are exempt from using two-factor.

Download the free Duo Mobile app on your smartphone from your app store, then activate your account by visiting login.wvu.edu, clicking the "My Login" button. You'll find enrollment instructions, a demonstration video, a helpful FAQ and more at twofactor.wvu.edu.

If you are an employee who doesn't have a smart phone, speak to your supervisor about hardware alternatives. To use state or Research Corp. funds for a display token or Yubikey, visit Mountaineer Marketplace and look for the two-factor button. All Barnes & Noble locations will begin selling devices to people using personal funds on March 5.

As of Feb. 22, a total of 7,178 devices were enrolled in WVU's two-factor program. The overwhelming majority (5,741) use the free Duo Mobile smartphone app, which works without cell data or Wi-Fi coverage. Another 1,371 are using simple, tamper-proof display tokens that generate a one-time code. Only 66 are using the Yubikey, which plugs into a USB port and works only with the Chrome browser. You can use more than one device.

Our statistics so far show that most people find this a simple adjustment. The ITS Service Desk has handled only 180 tickets related to two-factor from Jan. 1 to Feb. 18 out of 4,172 total tickets in that time frame. That's just 4 percent of all help requests.
