This season’s Festival of Ideas at West Virginia University will begin Tuesday (Sept.11) at 4 p.m. in the Okey Patteson Auditorium at Health Sciences. John Campo will highlight the public health realities of suicide across the lifespan and the rural-urban continuum, as well as the mismatch between the enormous societal impact of suicide and our investment in prevention.

For this month’s Science on Tap, Chris White, founder of White Labs, lecturer at the Siebel Institute of Technology, and author of Yeast: A Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation, presents traits and qualities of several strains of yeast used in industrial applications such as bread-making and beer-making.
WVU’s Lifetime Activities will offer horsemanship and horseback riding classes beginning in October. Additional new classes will be added throughout the fall.
Emily St. John Mandel will read from her book and participate in a discussion of its themes of pandemics, survival, art and humanity at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 19 in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre. Because of expected demand, the event will also be webcast.
