Baseball player wearing blue hat with gold WV on front and white shirt

Senior Hayden Cooper has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Mets, the sixth Mountaineer to either be drafted or selected in free agency by an MLB team this week.

Tyler Switaski is shown on the mound in mid-pitch while wearing a navy blue hat and shirt and white pants as a uniform.

Pitcher Tyler Switalski was drafted in the 16th round of the 2024 MLB Draft with pick No. 478 by the San Francisco Giants. He is the fifth Mountaineer taken in this year's draft, joining shortstop JJ Wetherholt (No. 7, Cardinals) and pitchers David Hagaman (No. 133, Rangers), Aidan Major (No. 146, Guardians), and Derek Clark (No. 262, Angels).

Right-handed pitcher David Hagaman was taken by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round, right-handed pitcher Aidan Major was scooped up by the Cleveland Guardians in the fifth round and left-handed pitcher Derek Clark rounded out the day for the Mountaineers as a ninth round selection by the Los Angeles Angels.

Standout shortstop JJ Wetherholt is the highest Major League Baseball draft pick in WVU baseball history, surpassing the mark set by former Mountaineer pitchers Chris Enochs and Alek Manoah who each went No. 11 in 1997 and 2019, respectively. Overall, he is the fourth Mountaineer to be taken in the first round.
