The Center for Community, Connections, and Culture and the Community Coalition for Social Justice are hosting a celebration of Morgantown’s “Gold Star City” status, recognizing its exceptional score on the 2025 Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index for support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Morgantown, the smallest city in the top 3%, scored 115 points out of a possible 122 points.

The recognition celebration will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Mountainlair Gluck Theatre or on Zoom.

Mike Attfield, chair of the Community Coalition for Social Justice, and Javier McCoy will provide opening remarks. Attorney Annie Cronan Yorick, who prepared the 2023-25 annual MEI reports, will discuss “How to Earn a Great Municipal Equality Index Score.”

Julia Myers, program specialist, and Ti Bedunah, director, will highlight the work of the Center for Community, Connections, and Culture and its focus on supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Andrew Schneider, executive director of Fairness West Virginia, will present “Don’t Stop Believing.”

Additionally, Kym Scott will direct a choir during the celebration.
