In the Neuromechanics and Engineering Lab, Sergiy Yakovenko is working to improve life for people with lower-leg prosthetics, one step at a time.
An associate professor in the Exercise Physiology Division of the Human Performance Department at the WVU School of Medicine, Yakovenko uses neuromechanical principles, along with new machine learning and virtual reality capabilities, to help amputees learn to walk with their prosthetic devices.
With a team of a postdoc and student researchers, he develops technologies that will help people with limited mobility overcome not only motor disability, but also loss of bodily sensation.
