Join bus trip to Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument

Olli Logo

The University community and friends are invited to join OLLI for an educational bus trip to the Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument on May 22.

The bus will depart from the Mountaineer Mall at 7 a.m. and return at approximately 10 p.m.

This experience offers an important opportunity to learn about a deeply impactful and often overlooked chapter of United States history, guided by individuals whose families lived it.

Visitors will be welcomed by the following Indigenous cultural educators and on‑site interpreters:

  • Sandra Cianciulli (Oglala Lakota Nation). Past president of the Carlisle Indian School Project, lifelong Native rights advocate and descendant of Carlisle students.

  • Boe Smith Nakakakena Harris (Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa). Cultural educator, musician, poet, traditional dancer and descendant of both Carlisle students and boarding school survivors.

Both interpreters will lead the guided tour of the grounds and share the history of Carlisle within a cultural context, personal family stories and Indigenous perspectives.

The cost is $140.

See the itinerary and register for the bus trip by May 4.
