Artificial intelligence is everywhere, from chatbots to image generators, but it comes with privacy risks. During Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services offers the following tips:

  • Follow University policy. Never enter WVU data into generative AI tools unless approved through the IT Purchase Request process. Review the WVU AI guidelines.

  • Protect personal information. Don’t share your own or other’s details with AI tools. Never provide sensitive or personally identifiable data like birth dates, addresses or financial information.

  • Read the privacy notice. Understand what data the company collects and how it’s used. Some companies retain your chats or images even if they are anonymous.

  • Beware of “glamour shot” and other AI trends. Uploading photos or generating enhanced images of yourself supports machine learning and the creation of deepfake photos and videos. And companies can keep your pictures indefinitely.

  • Stay informed. Keep up with AI developments to make informed decisions about the tools you use. Subscribe to trusted AI newsletters like therundown.ai or listen to podcasts such as Practical AI for regular updates and insights.
