Important tax information issued on health coverage forms

Stethoscope and Laptop

As we approach tax season, Benefits Strategy is sharing information about Forms 1095-C and 1095-B, which are related to health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

The ACA requires employers and health insurance providers to report information about health coverage offered to employees.

While these forms are not required to be submitted with your tax return, you should keep them with your tax records in case they are needed for reference or verification.

Form 1095-C

Form 1095-C provides information about the health coverage offered to you during the tax year, including the months you were eligible for coverage. Employees who will receive a Form 1095-C include anyone who was determined to be eligible for coverage as defined by the ACA for at least one month of the 2025 calendar year.

New for tax year 2025

Due to recent changes in federal requirements, employers are no longer required to automatically furnish Form 1095-C to employees. As a result, WVU will not automatically mail your Form 1095-C, and it will be available electronically.

Note: If you live in California, New Jersey, Rhode Island or Washington, D.C., these same federal requirements do not apply to you. WVU will mail a paper form unless you have opted to receive your Form 1095-C electronically.

Employees who transitioned from WVU Research Corporation to WVU employment in 2025 will have two 1095-C forms available; one from WVU Research Corporation and one from WVU, reflecting coverage offered during your respective periods of employment.

Accessing your Form 1095-C electronically

WVU employees who would like access their Form 1095-C may visit the external portal to securely view and download the form. Follow these enrollment instructions to opt into electronic access.

Former Research Corporation employees may access their additional Form 1095-C to securely view and download the form. Follow these enrollment instructions to opt into electronic access.

All employees who have previously enrolled in Paperless Access are encouraged to check their login credentials. Please note that your Social Security Number and employee number — not your nine-digit WVU ID beginning with 700 or 800 — are required in order to access your form electronically. Find more information.

Former Research Corporation employees will use the same employee number for both logins.

Form 1095-B

Form 1095-B is provided by the insurance carrier and reports the months you and any covered dependents were enrolled in health coverage. If you were not enrolled in health insurance through WVU in 2025, you will not receive a Form 1095-B. Health insurance carriers will continue to mail this form to your address on file.

Employees who transitioned from WVU Research Corporation to WVU employment in 2025 may have two 1095-B forms available, depending on your health coverage enrollment(s); one from WVU Research Corporation and one from WVU, reflecting your enrollment during your respective periods of employment.
